Applying for health insurance through the official market is something that can be done from the healthcare.gov page or a state page, by phone or by sending an email containing a previously filled out form (which you will have received by email or that it will have been downloaded from the Internet).
In order to fill out a form online, you will need to create an account, either from the healthcare.gov website or from your state market website.
You will need information on a few things for each person applying for coverage. Be prepared to provide the following information:
- your Social Security numbers (the document numbers of legal immigrants)
- information about your employers and your income
- the numbers of any current health insurance policies they have
If you are a beneficiary of health insurance associated with your current job but are not happy with it, you can choose to receive health coverage through healthcare.gov. In this case, before applying, you will need to fill out a form called the “Employer Coverage Tool”, which can also be found on the healthcare.gov website.
On the form they will ask for regular information, such as your name, your child’s name, your address, your phone number and your email. You will have to answer questions about your nationality, the people who depend on you and if you plan to file your federal income tax return next year.
If you want to ask for help paying for insurance, you will need to provide information on your annual income (and on the income of everyone who will benefit from health coverage). This includes income from work and other sources, such as:
- Social Security
- unemployment benefit
- retirement pensions
- property income
- alimony or spousal pensions
If you are paying alimony or student loan interest, you will be able to deduct the amount paid when you fill out the application form.
